Travel Writer Rebecca Hay Reviews Gael & Grain

We were delighted to welcome travel writer Rebecca Hay to Gael & Grain recently - and even more thrilled to read her glowing review on Our Man on the Ground Travel.

Rebecca, a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers, praised our new Seillean‑Mil cocktail, calling it a “canny cocktail paying homage to the humble honey bee” and noting its combination of “some of Scotland’s finest ingredients swirling round to create the sweetest of tastes.”

She also highlighted the community connection behind the drink: the whipped honey comes from rooftop hives across Glasgow, collected as part of a local beekeeping initiative with Young Enterprise Scotland — and £1 from every Seillean‑Mil goes to charity.

“The Epitome of Scottishness”

In her words, “Gael and Grain is the epitome of Scottishness, from the décor to the menus.” Rebecca described the atmosphere as “light, airy and welcoming”, with friendly young staff and a setting full of Scottish charm.

She was equally impressed by the food — calling our haggis tikka masala, Cullen Skink, and Irn Bru cheesecake some of the standout dishes. And she couldn’t resist recommending our own twist on a classic:

“The Irn Bru cheesecake has to be the biggest draw — true ‘Made in Scotland from girders’.”
